The Friends of the Baldwin City Library sponsor many activities throughout the year. Volunteers are needed to help organize these. Baldwin City residents and others throughout Douglas County have shown wonderful support by their participation!
Baldwin City writer and artist Ande Parks will give a presentation on his graphic novel Capote in Kansas at 7 p.m., Thursday, April 10, in the community room of the Baldwin City Public Library, Seventh and High streets. The event, which is hosted by the Friends of the Baldwin City Library, is free and open to the public.
Parks' graphic novel is a fictionalized account of Capote’s time in Kansas researching the Clutter family murders for his novel In Cold Blood. During the presentation, Behind the Page, Parks discusses the concerns that creators of graphic novels have, which are the same concerns as any artist: message, theme, and symbolism. Parks presents the script for a scene in the book, the artwork he produced based on the script, and then the finished page with lettering to show how this art form can tell a story in interesting and sophisticated ways.
The presentation is held in conjunction with Kansas Reads, a one-book, one-state reading project for adults, sponsored by the Kansas Center for the Book at the State Library of Kansas. This year’s event features In Cold Blood. The Kansas Reads project encourages adults to read, discuss, and experience the same book at the same time. The program kicked off on Kansas Day, January 29, and runs through April 30.
